Scribblenauts: Incredible Game

I don't get excited about video games much - I'm a (mostly) grown man. But Scribblenauts, an upcoming game for the DS, blows my mind clear out of my freakin' skull.

The premise is that you're some dude that needs to collect these star things. To do this you (the player) enter words which transform into the given object. Scribble in "apple" and an apple appears. Write in "train" and a train appears. You get the idea.

What's impressive is that they appear to have built an incredibly deep vocabulary, not only of words but also of how each object can interact in the world. The trailer is neat - gives you a feel for how the game can work. Then check out some nintendo geeks trying to guess words it doesn't understand (and how it is able to render whatever they throw at it). Then be amazed at the ten "impossible" words some joystiq writers tested the game with - and how the game passed with flying colors!

Still not impressed? Try this quote on for size:

I was in the early levels; I didn't quite have an idea of how ridiculously in-depth the database was. I was summoning things like ladders, glasses of water, rayguns, what have you. But I reached a level with zombie robots, and the zombie robots kept killing me. Rayguns didn't work, a torch didn't work, a pick-axe didn't work. In my frustration, I wrote in "Time Machine". And one popped up. What the f!%k? A smile dawned on my face. I hopped in, and the option was given to me to either travel to the past or the future. I chose past. When I hopped out, there were f!%king dinosaurs walking around. I clicked one, and realized I could RIDE THEM. So I hopped on a f!%ing DINOSAUR, traveled back to the present, and stomped the shit out of robot zombies. Did you just read that sentence? Did you really? I F!%KING TRAVELED THROUGH TIME AND JUMPED ON A DINOSAUR AND USED IT TO KILL MOTHERF!%KING ROBOT ZOMBIES. This game is unbelievable. Impossible. There's nothing you can't do.

Man, I might just need to convince a neighborhood kid to let me play theirs - this is gonna be bigger than Pokemon!

We had our good friends Brent and Heather over to play some blokus and eat some very delicious chicken noodle dish (thanks Heather!). After dinner we took to playing a game they brought called "Blokus". Turns out Brent is so good at this game that he's been annointed the Bishop of Blokus:

We had some of my coworkers over for our semi-regular poker game, and guess who was the big winner:

It was a great last hand - the other guy (Vincent) had a full house and I had four-of-a-kind with an ace high. Very exciting when we both went all in!

We had our annual work poker tournament over Halloween weekend at Vincent's house - it was a blast. Shannon, one of only two people there who were "noobies" when it came to Texas Hold 'Em, ended up winning the whole tournament (which netted her a cool $105)!

I am so unbelievably excited, it's difficult to describe. I just can't wait for it to arrive... should be here in a few days.

Circuit City still had a few left when I checked out (a co-worker was trying to get one too). Thanks to WiiTracker for the tipoff.

Acrobots and Screamin’ Beans

I love the internet for many reasons. One reason is that I occasionally stumble upon little things that make me giggle, then smile, and then waste 10 minutes doing absolutely nothing. Today I have two such wonderfully quirky things to share with you:

The first is Acrobots, a hypnotic time drain. You control small three-armed "acrobots" as they gracefully try to keep each other aloft. There's not much point to it - and yet I still found it quite enthralling.

The second one, Screamin' Beans, makes me laugh hysterically... but I'm not sure why. You'll want to mute your sound if there are other people around. Just keep clicking on things - you'll see what happens! I love the super saiyan reference at the end too!

Bible Fight

What a day for Bible characters. First we have the announcement that Walmart will carry Bible Action Figures. Super sweet, but not quite as cool as the Buddy Christ.

Now we have Adult Swim's Bible Fight, where you can play entertaining matching such as Jesus vs. Satan or Moses vs. Eve. Their "special moves" are quite good too - for example, Noah calls upon a herd of animals to trample you or can rain a torrent of water onto your head.

Wii Fun in the Hood

Mike and his lovely wife Kristen recently moved within walking distance of our house and it is a wonderful thing. And I'm not just saying that because he happens to also be babysitting a friend's Wii for a couple weeks

After putting the kid to sleep I headed over to their house to play some Bowling, Baseball, Billiards, and other games that don't start with the letter "B". It was a lot of fun to just hang out and play video games - reminded me of our youth.

As if I didn't already have enough reasons to buy the Wii for ~~myself~~ Libby, they just announced the release of a brand new fitness device called the Wii-Fit!

Must... resist... urge... to... buy...

Finetune Wii Player Rocks

The Finetune Wii player is the first in (hopefully) a long line of websites and internet services designed specifically to "play nice" with Nintendo's Wii. Using the Wii's built-in web browser you can navigate to this site and have the music play right over your television or stereo speakers. In fact their beautiful flash-based player will work through any web browser (like the one you're using right now), but the interface just fits best with the wand interface of the Wii.

My brother was lucky enough to find a Wii to buy the day after Christmas, so as a result I was lucky enough to see and play with it in person. Of course, now that I have seen the Wii in all of it's wonderful glory all I can think about is how much I want one for myself! But alas now is not the time for such toys - perhaps someday when the kids are old enough to join their dad in a fun game of Wii sports...

LegoLand’s Mini-New York City (and more)

I've had some pretty colossal lego projects growing up - with four kids who all played with legos the family accumulated enough pieces to build just about anything. But nothing we did compares to what the folks over at LegoLand have done over the years. As an example, check out these amazingly detailed images of a minature Lego New York City!

They also have San Francisco, Washington DC, and pics showing the building process of the future Freedom Tower in their NYC model city.

Interesting 3-D Puzzle Game

While taking a break from writing I came across an excellent 3-D puzzle game called '3-D Logic'. The object of the game is to color the grey squares on a cube so that each pair of colored bricks are connected (diagonals don't count). It's Rubik's cube meets connect-the-dots: soothing yet addictive.
