A great and provocative thinker died today. Christopher Hitchens, age 62, died from pneumonia (a complication of the oesophageal cancer he had) at a Texas hospital.

My Poor Car

I bring sad news about my car. Today I was in my first (and hopefully only) car accident!

No humans were injured. The other person's car, an SUV, had relatively minor damage to it's rear bumper. My beautiful, well-loved 1996 Honda Accord - on which we just spent $1000+ replacing the timing belt, pump, etc. - faired much worse:

I am glad no one was hurt, but at the same time I feel so sad that my wonderful little car was so damaged. No word yet from the auto body shop on how much the repairs might cost. So far my insurance and agent (Brent with Travelers) have been outstanding in handling this situation; within a couple hours I was driving away from the body shop in a (free to me) rental car.

The wife is angling to use this as an excuse to do a little vehicle shuffling. She has her eye on the GMC Acadia - any thoughts on that car?

"Tea Party" leader Mark Williams was on CNN"s Anderson Cooper 360 yesterday:

You can see some of the offensive rally signs they are referring to on Huffington Post (which is a far-left blog, so expect heavy bias).

"Tea Party" people are confusing and frustrating to me. Maybe they have something interesting to say, or maybe they have some novel approach to the existing/looming health care problem. But I don't see anything at this protest except hate and willful ignorance.

This was where my fraternity house once stood. They tore it down because we got kicked off campus and the place was a pit. Now it's just an empty lot between two sorority houses, and that makes me feel a little bit sad.

As of 10:30pm tonight you can still see this ad directly at McCain's site (it's the featured video on the homepage). To the casual observer this video sure makes Obama look like he said some pretty sexist things...

This is the "straight talking" McCain? This is how he wants to change our politics? How, for the love of all that is holy, did McCain allow such a BALD and DISGUSTING LIE to be released by his campaign?

I can only think of two possible answers:
1) John McCain is willing to distort the truth well beyond even Rove-ian type attacks in order to attack Obama on a personal level. This is an embarrassment to him and his campaign.
or
2) John McCain does not have control over what his own campaign releases. If he's not even able to control his own party, how the hell is he going to change them (let alone lead a nation)?

Where are the issues? Where is the meat? How do you excuse McCain for this type of bullshit?

We were originally introduced to Joel Peigh by Tiffany about a year ago - we were looking for a good contractor for our front porch. He came highly recommended not only because he is a high quality craftsman, but also because he is an honest, hard-working, high quality man. After finishing construction on our front porch (ahead of schedule and under budget) we could not agree more.

Joel was recently diagnosed with an advanced stage 4 esophageal cancer (median survival rate of 8 months). It is a shock - he is young and seems so healthy. Peigh It Forward has been created to chronicle the journey he and his family have embarked upon.

Shame on Sherri Shepherd

I fear that Sherri Shephard, a co-host on The View, has once again shown that there is no limit to her own stupidity. My brain nearly exploded after seeing the following clip from yesterday's show:

Did you hear what she said? Shepherd just attempted to assert that Christians existed in classical Greece, and that the Greeks threw them to the lions. When confronted on this point, she further claimed that "Jesus came first" (before Greeks and Romans) and stated "I don't think anything predated Christians".*

This wasn't the first time Sherri has been so ridiculously inane: a few months ago she said that she wasn't sure if the world was flat or not. I'll give you a second to process that one. Sherri isn't sure... if the world... is flat. Holy f*ckbuckets, Batman.

How do people like this exist, much less appear on broadcast television? Never before has this speech from Billy Madison been more relevant.

Sherri is so willfully ignorant it's painful. I would feel sorry for her if she wasn't so damn sure of her own infallibility.

The Darfur Wall

Until recently the conflict in Darfur has gone largely unnoticed, both here in the US and in the broader international community. The Darfur Wall is an attempt to bring more attention (and funds) to groups that are trying to help people in this region.

An estimated 400,000 people have already died. Compare this to the estimated 50,000 dead in Iraq and you begin to get a sense of just how blind our media has been to this genocide.
